What is the proper procedure for submitting a clarification of a code article? I know I can probably get a lot of input here and have posted question to other forms but my Supervisor wants to know from NEC a clarification of a code article.

Thanks
Gene

I believe that as an NFPA member, you can submit a question for a formal interpretation. In MA you can submit a question to the state board for a formal interp, too.

Formal Interpretation request form

I believe it has to be worded in a yes or no type of question .

Don't get your hopes up though.

Re: Submitting a Clarification of Code Article

Thank you gents, looks like I need to become a member. Next question would be how do I become a member?

Thanks

Re: Submitting a Clarification of Code Article

Go to NFPA.org and you will find it is very easy to become a member. All it takes is Name, address, and Credit Card Number.

Re: Submitting a Clarification of Code Article

The best place to get an interpretation of a code section is directly from your AHJ, unless of course this is the interpretation your are looking to refute.

Re: Submitting a Clarification of Code Article

I am a member of NFPA, and have received several technical document interpretations from NFPA. Some of which I wasn't happy with the result, but they were answered none the less. They can be submitted in writing if you want a written response, or by phone if you just want to know.
Their response time seems to be related to staffing. So with NEC 2008 meetings coming up, where some of the staff goes to, I'd submit soon.
Generally 7-10 days for written and within a day if verbal.

Re: Submitting a Clarification of Code Article

You do not have to be a member of the NFPA to get a Formal Interpretation(FI). The process of getting one may take a few months. The interpretations you get from the NFPA, other than a FI, are no more valid then the ones you get on this forum.

Right now is giong to be a very difficult time to get a formal interpretation, considering the fact the panels are discussing the 2008 In South Carolina right now. Indeed, this will take quite some time.
