I have a pole barn that is 100 x 50 that has 100amp main panel. There is wall down the center. The panel is full I can't use mini's. So I want to put a subpanel. Do I need run 4 or 3 wires. I like to make it 240V.

If the existing panel is single phase, 3 wire (120/240) you would need to separate the grounded and grounding conductors. You could use 3 wires if you had a metallic raceway between the two panels to serve as the EGC.

infinity i was curious, could a offset nipple count as a ground

Yes, it would qualify as an EGC. You could still install a wire EGC within the nipple if you like.

Help a city boy out here. Do pole barns normally have there own service?
Seems like the 100A panel would already be a sub panel.:-?

Eh, kinda depends. If a person has a business in a pole barn, and it is not part of a homestead or farmstead, it will have its own service. If it is on a homestead, it will most often be fed from the house. If it is on a farmstead, it will be fed from the CD pole.

Some do some don't, If it is close to a service supply yes it will be fed as a sub panel.

Then again some pole barns require a service because they are loacted far away from any buildings and services that could reasonably feed them .

Jim, If I want to feed a sub panel underground 100 ft from my service panel to my pole shed with a 100 amp feed what does the power company have to do with anything ???

I don't believe that its a Florida thing here . The utility supplys the service conductors to the service panel just like anywheres else, beyond that is not in their scope of operations.

Anymore different please lets here .

I wrote that in haste and would like to correct what i meant to say .

The utility supplys the service conductors to the line side of the meter , the load side service conductors supply the service panel disconnect.

What I meant to say they ( the utility ) have no resposibility or concerns after this point.

What does the utility, service vs. subpanel have to do with the OP? There is a panel in the barn, he wants to add another. Why does it matter what the original barn panel is?

In regards to the original post it does not matter, Jim was the one saying that the power company needs to get involved and I wonder why also ??

Dave58er asked if a question if most pole barns have their own service , again that would depend on how far its from the main service, around where I live that pole barn could be a 1/2 mile away, maybe more and it would need its own service.
