i have to install a flush mount 50amp oven receptacle. I'm not sure what type of old work box I should use. A 2 gang plastic old work device box? A metal 1900 box? What type of old work box would be able to allow a 6/3 romex cable to be securely fastened to it. This is an "old work" job....fishing wires between walls. The homeowner wants it flush mounted. Some suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!! Thanks!!

2 gang plastic cut in box in the back of the cabinet above the oven.

Drill a WP blank cover to accept a 1/2" flex 90 from the oven whip.

Just watch your cubic inches and use a 2 gang old work box. Personally I would use a surface range receptacle. You need a 2 gang with at least 27.50 cu. They make a 2 gang specifically for this but I can't recall who makes it.

Carlon does, or at least did. It was a 2g nail-on with a KO opposite the nail edge and a 2-screw cable clamp just inside the box. I guess the idea was to staple the cable to the stud on the other side of the bay.

I have used extra-deep 1g boxes for dryer receptacles (#10cu (who's a masochist?!)), but for a range, I would suggest using a deep 4" sq with a 2g plaster ring on it, all regular blue stocked Carlon stuff.

The flush dryer and range receptacles will mount to 1g or 2g boxes, but the cable will dictate a larger box.

Maybe one of these will work:

Guess I missed the "old work" part, the box I posted won't work unless you're opening up the wall.

Carlon B234ADJC. It is an adjustable box with a front nailer. It has a knockout with an integral clamp for larger wire. They have them here locally at both big boxes. It is not an old work, but only requires a touch of drywall repair. Be sure to clip the hooks of the mounting plate that normally grabs the stud, or else it will fight you. Just put one in the other day in a remodel I am working on. There is also a metal version. MB238ADJ, however it only has 1/2" knockouts. They were closed out at our big boxes so I snagged a bunch for $.01 each.

I just noticed that he said "oven recep".

Every oven I've ever seen has been hardwired with a factory whip so I don't know what the heck is going on

ok ok......im foggy on the terminology of a "cooking unit". the homeowner has a all in one "range"(?). cook top with 4 burners and the the door that you open where you can bake things in.........ive always called the whole unit an "oven". I guess you would call this a range.....? It is not hard wired. It comes with either a 3 or 4 pronged plug. I have to install the receptacle to be able to recieve the 4 pronged plug.

I am surprised it comes with a plug, most are direct wired. Would if permitted do away with plug and direct wire to j box just behind the unit. Be carefull where you locate box as often very little space. Put a 90 connector on whip and as been said make hole in a wp cover. add a breaker lock.
If you do use the plug it needs to able to be removed, and with no bottom drawer is a problem

Personally I like a lot of room with #6 so I would try to screw a 4-11/16 box to a stud and use a mud/device ring. Might not look pretty though.
