Could someone help answer this question ?
I have a 3/4 HP 110VAC Sump Pump I am using in a damp vault. NEC tells me that I cannot have a plug on this sump pump, I must have it hardwired and a snap switch disconnect(because it is over 1/3 HP). The pump came with a plug even though it is a 3/4 HP, the mfg. tells me that it is a 7 amp motor even though it's a 3/4 HP and that cutting the plug off to hard wire it will void the warrenty. Seems like I cannot use this pump because NEC conflicts with the mfg..
My original plan was to plug it into a dedicated GFCI outlet !

The NEC (Art 430) allows a cord connector and receptacle to be used as a motor disconnect. The cord connector has to be rated for the motor horsepower. Check the mfgs instructions and catalog to determine what that rating is.
And more importantly, some sump pumps have a air line in the cord that vents the diaphram(controlling the pump via a switch).The air line will be molded into the plug. If you cut this plug off the pump will not operate correctly.

Hello Tom , I am glad you mention this one with sump pump cord i was thinking the same thing and i was not too crazy to cut the cord end off and converted to hardwire so i will say many thanks for head up with this.
that will save some of my headache and swearing in french :D

The section I am looking at is 430.83(B), which then refers to 430.81 (B).
Would I be correct in saying anything over 1/3 hp is ok to use the plug and cord so long the plug and receptacle have both got the hp rating on them ?
