While looking up code references for the dishwasher thread, I came across some code rules that sound like product standards:

422.17
422.42
422.44
422.45
422.46
422.47
422.49
422.50
422.61

Are these rules within the scope of the NEC?

Edited to add more.

I think these came about because UL and the CPSC decided these features were desirable from a safety standpoint and convinced someone to add them to the electrical code to force it on the rest of us.

Re: Superfluous 422.XXX rules??

You mean to void insurance if the fire marshall finds that my iron didn't come with a stand?

Re: Superfluous 422.XXX rules??

Isn't your iron grandfathered to when you bought it? :D

if you read the section carefully, it states the stand can be built in to the iron. i have never seen an iron that does not sit upright. so my guess is your iron does meet the requirement.

are you allowed to build your own water heater? IIRC, a water heater has to be ASME stamped.

Shoot, I was hoping no one would take me seriously. :D I should have included this guy ;) in my post.

Good question though. You are probably right. All the more reason why these rules don't belong in the code.
