I recieved the following question from another engineer:

Is there anything in the code (NEC) that prevents the connection/support of an electrical system from a pipe that contains a combustable fluid?
Is there an NEC article that specifically prohibits this?

Does the NECA "Good workmanship in electrical contracting" say anything about this?

I know its not a good idea to use pipes as support for conduit, but is it prohibited?

I don't think the fact that the fluid is combustiable has any effect on this.

Re: Support of electrical conduit and systems

Steve the NEC prohibits supporting other systems from raceways but I do not believe the NEC prohibits supporting raceways from other systems.

That said I fully expect that mechanical and plumbing codes have prohibitions against using those systems as support.

Re: Support of electrical conduit and systems

I though I would get more comments on this. I know its a bad idea to support conduit and stuff from pipes, and I always assumed there was something to prohibit this. What if the pipe has to get moved, repaired, replaced or taken apart? I am sure the pipefitters won't bother to properly support the conduit that was hanging from their pipe. And what about the pipe hammering when flow starts or stops? That can't be good for conduits and electrical systems?

Am I the only one that thinks this is a safety issue?
