I like Marc's idea.
If not, why not try putting duct seal in the raceway where it enters the box upstairs.

Is the duct-seal rated or designed for that purpose?

The objective here should be to relieve the pulling stress on the conductor terminals.

Contact TWR Lighting (supplier of lighting equipment for communications towers) http://www.twrlighting.com

They make a wire support for vertical conduit runs, which are generally 150 feet between lighting levels
