Supporting pipe off of other pipe

Let's say you have multiple large pipes running thru an area, fully supported to code. Now you need to run a smaller pipe next to it for a short run, but there is an area in which you can't get any support within the 10' that you are required. Is it ok to strap (for example) a piece of versabar (unistrut) across the existing large pipe run and have it stick out to support the new pipe with? Basically, you'd be using pipe to support another pipe. Compliant?

I see this done often, and IMO a bank of 4" can easily support a 3/4" pretty rigidly. But I never knew if it was complaint with the code.

IMO, violation of 300.11(B). That said I have been known to do this many times. If the inspector questions it I always have a plan to drop an all-thread or something to the new rack to make it "look" supported.
