For those that do fairly large commercial jobs with specs(not that it matters I guess) how do you support 4 or 5" box with a smoke detector from gyp or acoustical ceiling? T-bar etc.?

Caddy makes several options for your application. Here's one for acoustical tile. For Sheetrock you can use a regular wall mounting bracket.

no it is an option depending on the weight needing to be supported.
I may have been confusing things with the requirement for fixtures. Caddy says their T-bar hangers are good for 20 pounds without additional support, but I don't see anything on their website regarding a UL listing on this.

I've seen the same issue with lights where yes they're listed for support one way but the local building code requires independent support anyway.

I think it has more to do with the grid and the grid manufacturer's installation requirement than it does the bracket itself for a requirement to tie with an independent wire.

I've never been able to find anything from a grid manufacturer that directly addresses this. If someone has information on this, please feel free to share.
