Does anyone know of a floor outlet that mounts on the floor, and can be fed by cable or conduit coming up from underneath. This is a hardwood floor and there's very little space underneath, just a couple inches, enough to get a romex in. We used to use "tombstone" boxes, but I can't find any, except those that attach to an underfloor duct system. If you know of any please let me know. Thx. (residential)

its not sitting on top of floor joists? i don't understand what you mean by 'only a couple of inches' beneath the floor.

Is this like a slab that has been furred up to accomodate the wood floor. What is underneath?

If it is a slab you can jackhammer the slab where the box is just enough to get a box in.

Until the OP said that he can't find tombstone boxes that will take a direct conduit entry, I always assumed they still existed. Doesn't seem like that long ago I used one. I just did a search, and I'm coming up empty too. An FSY body is about the only thing that comes to mind, otherwise.

That's right, it's a slab with furring strips and hardwood. I may have to chisel in but I was hoping not. We used to use those "tombstone" boxes and they had a 1/2" KO in the bottom, maybe it was an adapter plate, I don't remember. That was back in the 80's. Shows how old I am. Well if you hear of a box like that let me know, otherwise I'll chisel in a bit. Thx.

Marc, that's a good one to know about, but it's a little too high as this will be under a couch. I'll keep it in mind for the future though.

Try Hubble Model # SC3099AHPW May be what you are looking for. It is the only thing out there that I have found. Use 1" to 1/2" reducer washers on your romex. I just installed 6 of these fed with MC cable and our inspector passed the installation.

Ive used these before, they are nice, just never used them in residential...
Thanks for adding the picture...I guess you could always just use a 1" romex connector instead of reducers

I used to call those floor boxes dog houses? Not sure if that name is still used or not... and I would probably just use reducing washers also...

Can you imagine when they move the furniture and that thing is left behind?
Well we talked about that, but it's what he wants to do. It's in a downtown condo loft, they don't want to cut into the cement floor. So, sometimes we have to follow the wishes of those who pay us, as long as it's legal, and as long as they understand what they're getting. What can one do.

Don, what is the distance from the floor surface to the concrete surface? If you have a genuine two inches, Steel City has a pair of metal OW boxes, that are 2" deep and have a 10.5 cu-in volume, which would allow a 14-2 and a device.

They are the #LXMWOW (NM cable) and the #LXMOW (AC/MC).

Yeh, but can you find a protective cover that will fit on a 2" deep old work metal box, that is the question....
