Surge arrester connected to a service

We are installing a MeterMod that has a main disconnect section. Plans call for a surge arrester to be installed in the main section. Article 280 doesn't seem to specify weather or not the arrester requires an OPD. Are the lead wires coming from the arrester allowed to be directly connected to the buss work?

Surge arresters do not. Check the manufacturers instructions one more time to be sure the model you're dealing with doesn't.

230.82 permits surge arresters to be connected to the line side of the service disconnect, yes.

Bear in mind different rules apply to TVSS's.

Thats what I thought George. Most times the arrester is installed in a panel and we use a breaker. Thanks for the input.
