Any opinions on Meter Socket Surge Arresters? .... On Surge Arresters incorporated in main panels? .... On Surge Arresters incorporated in the new "Super Panels" with AFIC and Surge Arresters? .... Hi to Chis Kennedy, a very fine and professional man in the forum.

I feel the meter socket TVSS (in the 2008 NEC its a SPD)is an excellent product. Its diverts the surge before it enters the house, and has zero lead length. Doubling the lead length doubles the impedance.
With TVSS, you get what you pay for. More is better.
Install another TVSS at the panel and then point of use protectors. The point of use protectors use the impedance of the building wiring to reduce the surge.

In my area, the PoCo will install a meter socket TVSS and rent it to the customer for something like 7 bucks a month. That's one expensive TVSS if you live there for a long time.

Yes, cascaded protection is best. Protection from within as well as from without.
