We want to put a flush mount surge protector next to our breaker panel in the garage. It has 4 x #12 THHN wires coming off of it. Do they have to be in a conduit in the wall cavity or the 2 x 4 that the panel is screwed into? Tia

You can pretty much put it where you want but the closer the better. You would need some kind of conduit unless you mount it right on the panel.

You might be able to locate it inside of the panel.

Why don't you just use the breaker style unit that just installs in the panel?

The ones that mount to the panel typically have a 1/2" nipple attached to them that goes in a 1/2" KO and is secured by a locknut.

Wire length and 90° bends can negatively impact the performance of surge protectors. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations.
