In the picture posted below I have a surge protector model S50A120V3Y, 120/208 (third model listed in the picture.) In theory based on the specs could this be used on a 120/240 volt system like the model above it in the picture? I realize this would violate the listing of the surge protector and would be a violation but it looks like it has the same specs and would work just fine on the higher delta voltage system. Any thoughts?

unfortunately the picture upload is not working so here is the URL. Page 2 the chart on the left hand side. I have the 3rd model listed and am wondering if in theory if it would work just fine as the 2nd model on a 120/240 system.

I think it would probably be fine. Wire on the SPD would just not be used.

I don't know that it actually violates any listing instructions either. The data sheet is not the same thing as the listing instructions.

My surge protector on it says 120/208...but I can’t see any reason why this 3 phase 120/208 surge protector could not be used on a single phase 120/240 residential panel....other than wording...I believe in theory it would work fine.

If the install requires inspection it could raise eyebrows even if it is allowed by the instructions.

I'd get the correct SPD, for two reasons:

1) The MOV's may or may not have the same clamping voltage and characteristics between the two models. If your 208V SPD has MOV's that clamp at a voltage close to your 240V line voltage, they may prematurely fail from even a slightly high line-to-line voltage.

2) If you ever have a surge event and the SPD fails to protect other downstream equipment, the manufacturer and/or the insurance company will look for any excuse not to cover a claim. Using a 3ph SPD on a single-phase panel of a different supply voltage might just be the excuse they need to deny coverage.
