I'm a little confused on the bonding requirements for inground (any type I guess) pools. Does a metal fence, that is more than 5 feet from the waters edge, but within that dimension of the pump and equipment have to be bonded? Downspout? A/C condenser? You get the idea.

All metal within 5 feet of pool bonded to the pump
Yes, I realize that, I'm asking about metal within 5 feet of the pump, 3 inspectors have made me go back and bond to an A/C and downspouts next to the pump.

Threy are wacked. I don't even thing the nec calls for the fence to be bonded within 5 feet. Any metal parts associated with the pool that are within 5 feet I concur needs bonding. I have yet to be convinced of the bonding of a fence.

Mariano Riveras nephew got electrocuted by a fence next to the pool that had become energized by a post in contact with an underground feeder cleaning the pool with that long aluminum skimmer net thing.

ALL metal, fence included, within 5 feet of the water bonded to the pump. Nothing more. Nothing within 5 feet of the pump. Within 5 feet of the pool water only. The idea is to get everything within 5 feet on an equal plane. It's hard to touch the water and any metal over 5 feet away. Puts you kinda like the bird on the wire should there be any stray voltages.

Yes I am sorry for his lose but if he were running around barefoot and there was no pool but rather a garden shed with power he probably would have died also. That death, imo was not related to a pool. If the fence was 6' away he may still have been killed by the fence.

right, as long as its within 5' of the pool.

I am not going to comment further on this as it has been debated to death. I am not sure of the intent of 680.26(B)(5). The heading seems to not include fences. I would probably cover my but and bond the fence closer than 5' but I am still not convinced it is necessary.

Perhaps it is more common in other areas where the space is tight but I have never seen a metal fence closer than 5' to a pool. In fact I rarely even see metal fences around pools.

I agree with you Dennis, What kind of fences do you normally see? wood? or some type of pvc? I seem to only see metal fences go up, but they are never even close to the pool.

BTW, Thanks Stickboy for posting that article. Quite a different perspective from what was explained in the post.

Let's see Mariano Rivera makes, How many Millions? He can't afford a fence instead decides to electrify the water.

It reminds me of a customer who called me up to electrify her roof because they were overrun with these South American geckos that her ex-husband brought in. Yeah, I'll be right over. She was serious-- so was I.

Just to bust some chops, here are a couple of pictures of metal fences around pools. Up north here, it is the first thing the B.O. looks for when entering the property.

This fence is fairly close, but most likely will not require bonding - there are some ECs here who will bond to it anyway.

This fence is closer and will looks like it will require bonding

and, like in Goldie Locks and the 3 Bears, this one is "just right" :D

I believe you are reading it incorrectly. I believe that is the ground around the pool.
