I have a question about the junction box for wet-niche fixtures. They are 120volt fixtures and we have the conduits stubbed up in the building housing the pool equipment. What type of junction box has to be installed? Can it be a NEMA 1 box or does it have to be pvc or some other material? Thanks!!

The junction box you want to use is very specific for pool & spa lights. The box will mount on top of the conduit. Has a metal base with built in clamps for the pool light wire and ground lugs. If you are using pvc pipe, then you have to pull in a seperate ground wire with the cord from the pool light.
Contact pool suppliers or your local electrical supplier to purchase a pool light junction box. The junction boxes have different size hubs in the bottom, so match it to your pvc pipe.

The bonding conductor, if in pvc will need to be #8 insulated (stranded or solid) and potting compound will be required. The light cord will provide the equipment grounding conductor. If brass or other approved corrosion metallic conduit is used #8 not required.

The pvc conduits from the lights are run to the pool pump house and the junction boxes will be above the water line so no water will get in the boxes. They are 120 volt fixtures so they won't have any tranformers. Do I still need a threaded hub j-box in the pool area outside? Art. 680-20 is kind of confusing and I don't see the need for a junction box outside if the cords from the fixture are long enough to reach the junction boxes in the pump house. It's been probably 20 years since I've done a commercial pool but I don't recall using special pool light boxes.

I say yes ..yes you will still need the the Pool Light junction box

As long as you are using wet-niche lights, you need to have the junction box that is made for the pool lights.

The picture of the one that M.D. posted is one made by Intermatic, and they are good. The one pictured is for two lights, and they also make a larger box for up to 4 lights. The conduit entries are made for 1" PVC, but they also include reducers for 1/2 and 3/4" . (I use these same ones on a regular basis as I usually do lots of pool wiring jobs.)

Intermatic sells a wall mount bracket for those boxes that I would recommend using if you can mount this to a wall.

Other brands of boxes are made by American Products, and Thermocraft.

Electrical wholesale houses don't readily carry these items. I usually have to buy them from a swimming pool wholesale supply like SCP- http://www.poolcorp.com

Good luck!

Thanks for all the help guys! One more thing- does this box have to be located outside in the pool area or can I install it on the wall in the pump house where the conduits are stubbed up? They're going to pour the slab around the pool soon so I need to do any changes ASAP.

I think the reason the pool box is required is for it's unique bonding design not only for the location that it sometimes mounted.
