Swimming Pool..........

Re: Swimming Pool..........

Yes I have wired a few pools but most AHJ's here tell us what they want and that's what we try to meet. But it seems that by placing your twist-loc receptacle 6' away will not allow you to have a 3' cord on your pump. That is what is cornfusing. If 680.7(A) and 680.21(A)(5) both require a 3' cord on a pump how can we be in compliance with 680.22(A)(1) with out relocating the pump closer to the receptacle? Yes i've seen it done but and have even done myself, but to give advice out here I would like to be more correct about it.

What I don't understand is why 680.22 requires the receptacle to be 10' away or 5' if all of the 4 items are met. and why if this is for storable pools then why is it under 680.22? and not 680.31?

Re: Swimming Pool..........

I have never had a problem with the cord not reaching. Usually you can move the pump around to make the cord reach. This requirement is not for "Storable pools" this is for permanantly installed pools. I think the idea, as chris mentioned, is to prevent anybody from using the receptacle for anything other than the pump. It sounds odd that the inspector here will not allow a longer cord but will allow what sounds like an extension cord or flexible cord used as a permanent wiring method. To me that in itself is a violation.

Re: Swimming Pool..........

the inspector tells me to go back in ground from the pole(thats 5' away)and pop up at the pump ,says the pump should have a twist lockn plug, this is a muskin pump that was supplyed with the pool and has a 10' cord, says i could put a male n female twistlock at the pump but i'm not sure of a wp box that i can use at the pump to store a male female plug in

Re: Swimming Pool..........

This is a common type of installation and is done successfully everyday. I've never had a problem making the 3ft cord reach a receptacle 5'2" away from the Pool. The Pump has to be moved away from the pool a little. The hoses should be long enough and the cord should reach unless the outlet was mounted too high.

How this is code-compliant?

Re: Swimming Pool..........

The wording in 680.22(A) "from the inside walls of the pool". The measurement should be made with the tape measure touching the inside wall, wrapping over the top of the pool, and taking a diagonal line to the receptacle. This duplicates the reach potential of a swimmer. Is this the way some of you other installers do it?
