Ive been asked about putting a switch on portable generators, to easily switch the neutral between bonded and unbonded, so they can be used for both home standby power and remote power.

My opinion is that the switch would need to have an SCCR rating, and there would have to be an available fault current Calc done on the generator.

I don’t think toggle switches even have an SCCR rating, so I’d be looking at a non-fused disco. 😳 Kind of large for an 8kw portable. 🤣

What sort of current could a small generator even drive into a short circuit?

Would a switch with a horsepower rating be suitable?

Not sure.

Not even sure how to do a fault current Calc on a Genny.

I just know that all fault current will flow through that switch.

I have a 40 year old Devilbiss generator, where the manufacturer had in their instructions, a 15 amp male plug with the neutral and ground jumpered together to plug into one of the outlets as a bond when required. That would be the kiss philosophy. I will have to check with my dad to see if he still has the instructions. His is a year newer, and he keeps instructions, where I toss them with the boxes they come in. LOL!

Years ago, I had made one, but SouthWire does sell a pre-molded one.
Internally jumps the neutral to ground.
Unplug when not needed.
I zip tie it to the gen, w a long loop.
Again... not the best solution at all!
