weve got a customer who had his pier rebuilt after huricane ivan. he now wants us to rewire his pier the concern i have is that hell be running a switchleg from inside his house to his pier. he will then be feeding two fish lights one security light and a receptacle now am i crazy but isnt that quite a load for one 20a switch I know to factor in the vdrop its the load that im putting on this switch

Re: switch leg feeding a pier

What size lamps, how far, what will be plugged into the receptacle, and what size wire to the pier?

As far as the switch is concerned, use a 20 amp commercial or industrial grade switch.

Re: switch leg feeding a pier

im going guesstimate 350ft to end of the pier not sure offhand about wattage of lights customer says he doesnt use recep all that much probaly a radio while hes fishing the original elec pulled 10awg

Re: switch leg feeding a pier

I suggest that you run a 3 wire leg out there - with the receptacle on one of the legs, and the lights on the other. 350', that is a long way.

If it is a 'whip' can you use 16 AWG?

Re: switch leg feeding a pier

Southernboys, you will have to know the load before you can calculate the voltage drop.

#10 for a light load will probably be fine.

Re: switch leg feeding a pier

I know ive got to have the load to find vd. my concern is that i dont think this pier is the only load on this lighting circuit if it was fed from a breaker straight to the pier it wouldnt concern me at all i guess what i was looking fot is there a code that would prohibit a switchleg to feed this pier i guess not as long as i size my wire large enuff to handle the vdrop?
