My favorite use example is that when your hammer misses the nail you are holding you may end up with a "proud thumb".

The generic Raco 189 in my hand, with a single gang 1/2 " ring on it mics out at exactly 1.75 " from the back of the back to the crest of the 8/32 cover screws.

The thickness of the steel box back + the thickness of the ring + the thickness of the cover screw heads all add to the interior box depth of 1.5 ".

That extra 1/4 " will play havoc with the flatness of the wall if it is proud of the framing face. Whether it is proud will be entirely a function of how tight the 1.5" stud is to the masonry wall.

Well, I keep a vernier caliper at the desk, which is what I used. So, . . . what? I "calipered" the box?

I figured a tape measure would be accurate enough.

It'll definitely do in a pinch. The caliper's nice cause of the ability to hold the measurement and to read off the higher accuracy than what my sight line by a tape would do.

The thing about the basic 1900 with plastering thickness is that it has always "felt" like about 1-3/4 inches but I'd never really checked it.
