switch wiring question

I removed a wall in my house that had two light switches on it - one on either side of the removed wall. I am trying to connect a single gang double switch to control the two fixtures on either side of the removed wall. This is an older house. There are two lines coming from the attic (each with black and white wires) and both white wires are hot. I cannot figure out how to take these two lines and connect the switches for them. Any help is much appreciated.
