I'm a bit confused on Article 408.18(A). It states "for other than a totally enclosed switchboard......"What is considered "other than a totally enclosed switchboard"? Aren't all switchboards "totally enclosed"? Any clarification would be much appreciated.
 
Many old switchboards contained exposed knife switches on the front of the switchboard and exposed bus on the back of the switchboard.
 
You're welcome. I remember seeing a lot of them in old buildings in NYC over 20 years ago. I wish I had some photo's. Those boards, built in the 30's, were something to see with huge 400 amp knife switches.
