Switches and receptacles located near tub

I'm trying to determine if there's a "keep-out" zone around a bath tub or shower stall for switches and receptacles like there is for luminaires. I found article 404.4 for switches and article 406.8(B)(2)(C) for receptacles. Both articles seem to be saying that a switch or receptacle shall not be located directly within the footprint of the tub or shower stall. Are there any other requirements I have missed?

Thanks in advance.

I think you have it covered. Switches and recep. may be rdirectly outside the footprint of the shower or tub. Be forewarned many people have a different interpretation on this one. 404.8 says recep. shall not be installed within or directly over a bathtub or shower stall. Seems clear to me.

I am running into this problem myself right now. I had a final inspection yesterday and the inspector told me that there was a 3' zone around the tub in which no electrical was permitted. He said this applied to switches and receptacles and if there were any lights/ fans within this zone they had to be treated as if they were in a wet location (ie shower trim on a recessed can, GFCI protection for the fan). I told him that I had never heard of this requirement before and would he kindly find it for me in the NEC. After about15 minutes of digging and coming up empty he told me that he would have to find when he got back to the office and fax me the info. BTW I pointed out 406.8(B)(2)(C) to him and he insisted that there was something else that he couldn't find at the moment. I had someone bring up an interesting concept about this in that maybe it is a IRC requirement rather than NEC. I am supposed to find out this morning so if I hear anything back I will post it.

He will not be able to find it because it does not exist. You gave him the correct code reference. Unless he wants to argue that a bathtub is really a swimming pool, he is wrong, wrong, wrong. I hope he will admit his mistake.

Print out the two graphics that Stickboy posted and fax it over to him. He won't find this requirement because it's non-existent.
