We are getting ready to wire a house for some duck hunters and on all the switches to the exterior lights by each man door they would like the switch outside. Does the NEC say that the switch for the exterior light at each door has to be inside the residence?
They want to walk up to the doors and turn on the outside lights without opening the doors.

The switches can go inside or outside, in the garage or in the basement if you prefer. Look at 210.70(A)(2).

Mike,

As others have said...the NEC does not tell you where they have to go....can be behind the doors and so on but the "Common Sense" rules does apply here.....obviously there are rooms in a dwelling that REQUIRE a switched light.....and near or in the room would be the "Common Sense" type of rule...but the NEC does not say it has to be so...

Now funny how in attics for lights to service units...the switch DOES need to be at the opening.....but thats a different fish story in itself.

Would they like to also be able to turn on the lights from inside at times? If so, perhaps they will need a set of 3-ways. Another alterative would be to install a motion detector light at the door. That way they could leave the switch on and the light would come on automatically when they approach the door. That may be more convenient than having to go outside to turn on the light. There are many ways to accomplish what the customer wants and/or needs.

Agreed. I'd strongly recommend back-to-back 3-ways at each door. I'd hate to have to go outside to operate an exterior light (especially in bad weather) more than I'd hate to have to reach inside.

Now that we know about the switch location.Let's get on to a more important question
How's the duck hunting??

NJ northern zone opens October 14.

With the size of NJ, I'm surprised they break it up ino zones.:)

Not to go off on a tangent but NJ has some of the most complicated game laws in the country. The deer season hunting zones list is pages long. You really need to be a lawyer to know how to read the thing.

So; do you have the time to read that too? Maybe a better question would be "Do you know how to read that too?"

I think you need a lawyer to understand certain portions of the NEC too.

Which leads me to another question:

How do the deer know where the deer crossings are?
