I could be wrong but I always thought it was pretty common practice to use white as a hot in that situation and the others as switch legs. You just don't bring your neutral down to the switches. If you mark the white wire in the switch and jbox above any electrician worth his salt should be able to see what's going on there. Even in conduit I don't bother bringing neutrals to the switch boxes. It's just an extra joint and for what?

Using the white to feed switches isn't 'pretty common practice'. It is a Code requirement.

'If' is not an option. Reidentification it is also a requirement.

Yes yes but I mean it's pretty common to do as opposed to running two 12/2's and having a pointless useless neutral splice in your switch box. And not everyone does what is required. You've seen it I've seen it we've all seen it. Geez some people really do take everything literally. :roll:
