I don't think it's right to charge for lunch. you don't pay your workers while at lunch do you?

I don't know how common it is in other areas but around here a fair number of smaller (and all non-union AFAIK) employers of various stripes do. Not sure how it came to be or why. Its by no means universal though. Just not especially rare.

Where my dad worked they got paid lunches. I worked there one summer and got paid lunches as well.
