When you tone out a cat 6 cable what does that involve? Is it the same as a wire map test?
Heard people say tag and tone? Thanks.

Tone and tag = imagine a bunch of unmarked cables, they are identified and labeled at each end. Tone tag & test would involve using a cable verifier to certify they meet spec.

Thanks. You just contradicted yourself. you said there are unmarked cables but then they are labeled and identified.

I didn't use enough words.
Customer has a bunch of unmarked cables. To perform tone and tag you use a toner to figure out which cable is which and you label each end.

T&T - identify and mark cables (<$50 of equipment)
Wiremap- make sure they're probably wired correctly (mapping can't catch a "split pair") (<$100 of equipment)
Certify- make sure they comply with the appropriate CAT spec. (>$1000 equipment)

Thanks a lot guys. SO to tone out a cable what's the process? Guy on each end etc.?

Depends on the layout and how big the place is and how many cables there are, and how much you want to walk back and forth. In the few dozen times I have done it, ive been alone. Hook tone generator to and label a far end. Go back to the bundle, find the cable and label. Retrieve the tone generator go to the next one and repeat.
