tamper resistant plugmold

Both wiremold and Tasklighting were completely unaware of the TR receptacle requirements When I called them. It will be quite a while before they have a product for sale that meets code.

Here is a response from converstaions I have been having with Wiremold. The funny thing is it is now Wiremold "Legrand", as in pass and Seymour "Legrand" who happens to have all of their receptacle line avaiable in TR. Larger corporations don't necessarily mean better corporations I guess.
They need an intercompany communication system. If only they could communicate through computers...some sort of electroninc mail...

Steve, My name is actually Scott but you just call me whatever you want Mr Wiremold

I spoke with our Custom Engineering Dept on Friday about the NEC 2008 Article 406.11 where it requires Tamper resistant receptacles in dwellings. It is something they are currently working on but as of right now we do not offer them in our Plugmold strips. One of our Engineers thought that that would apply only to new construction only but he is looking into it for me and will send me some document to that effect shortly.

Thanks

I can't believe that Wiremold dropped the ball like that. They're usually pretty quick with innovation.

Considering that Wiremold is now owned by Legrand, and Pass and Seymour, also owned by Legrand, has a full line of TR stuff available, it does not make any sense whatsoever.

I agree that saving lives is omportant but I wonder how many children are killed each year from sticking something in an electrical socket? I honestly don't know, however in an effort to save the lives of children we should also reduce the speed limit on the interstate to 10 MPH because I'm sure that high speeds have led to deaths. In fact we should probably outlaw driving all together. While we're at it. how about outlawing stairs in a house, I'm sure a child has fallen down stairs before. Why stop there... No more bathtubs, I know many children die of drowning each year.

I know where your coming from, but you have to agree that requiring TR receptacles was an easy choice... you dont even have to do anything on your part yet you might actually save a child from getting burned or worse just by following a code.

Considering that the TR receptacles are only about a $1 premium over regular receptacles (GFI's I don't know how much more they cost) this should be a moot point, but I guess not.

Well, we do have speed limits. :-?

And we also have rules that must be followed when driving.

yeah but I'd rather a dead kid than have the government tell me what to do.

Give me liberty or give me a dead baby... Is that how it goes?

My point is not that spending an extra $100 per house is not worth it, my point is that every one is always anxious to pay "what ever the cost" to save the life of one child. They clearly don't mean this, and just say it for effect. Otherwise they would cash in their life savings and sell everything they own in order to donate the money to help a worth while childrens charity. In our society, for better or worse, we have accepted a certain level of risk to live the way we do. This will at times result in the untimely death of some. It is a sad commentary on our society, but true.

+1

Those plastic plugs keep kids out just as well, and if your to lazy to put those in I doubt you will pay a sparky to install tamperproof. Are all people with families required to comply with this code? I think not.

I am very tired of the save the children BS. I have two of my own, I love them more than anything and I would be devastated if something happened to them. But mandating you buy a $3 item when a $.05 item does the same job is just good marketing. Way to play off of peoples fears! It's a great way to get people to part with their money.
