Is it permissable to use tandem breakers in a 30 ckt. panelboard that is already maxed out? I thought i seen in the code where is said no more then 42 overcurrent devices in a panel but im not sure about a 30 ckt. If u cant use them, then what would even be the purpose of them???

The 42 breaker limit is discussed in 408.35 (2005 version). The question of whether you can use tandem breakers is one for the manufacturer. If they say tandems are OK, then you can use them. But the 42 breaker limit still applies.

Manufacturers rate different panels differently some are rated to accept a limited number of tandems and some are just what they are30/30 or 40/40 etc.I have found you can usually eyeball a panel that is tandem rated by the buss bars.Most have a split portion to accept the tandem,but going to manufacturers web sites and getting specs takes the guessing out of the picture.
