Would a tank heater for a stock tank filled with water for cattle and horses need to be gfi protected? The tank heater is 120v with a factory 15a male end on it which is submerged in the metal water tank. The tank is located in a field about 150' from the panel, underground pvc and a t-11 box is already in place by the tank.I feel like there should be a gfi breaker installed to protect the cattle in case they should step on or damage the outlet for the heater or if the heater should happen to malfunction, but at the same time am concerned about neusance tripping due to the location and the tank water freezing anyway. What is required by code?

Re: tank heater

547.10(A) does not require one but I would install one anyway. Also, an equipotential plane should be installed to satisfy 547.10(A) if it has a concrete apron. If the area is dirt, 547.10(B) applies and a GFCI would have to be installed. :D
