tap rule

i have an hvac disconnect fed with # 6 existing. can i tap with # 12 to a small breaker for a n outlet? I am thinking this is ok but am not quite sure.Was thinking of using a small one breaker enclosure and the feed from that to the outlet .

Sounds Ok. The one potential problem I see is how are you going to tap the #6 conductors? Slipping a #12 under the same lug as the other conductors would be a violation.

only about 6 to 8 ft but under 12. would splice in the hvac dis. and reefeed each load at that point.
