No maximum exists in the NEC, but if it did, it would be in Art. 400.

Most manufactured lights have a 6-foot cord, so it is able to reach a receptacle without an extension cord. This is why 210.52(A)(1) has the 6' rule.
 
lets look at it this way.i am taking a single light strip and putting a cord and plug to it to be used as a light for a show case not attached to any structure.
how long can the cord be.

Long enough to reach the outlet.:grin:
