Tea brewer...

I would contact U.L. because this is a problem that they can help address .

I would not use it as a threat.

It would be a safe bet that the "brew master " folks will want a 30 amp breaker for a receptacle rated at 20 amps.

In fact that's exactly what they want

OK so everyone agrees the plans need to be corrected. FINE!

But lets say, Hypothetically.... It is installed as on the building plans, passes inspection, etc. Remember this is hypothetical.

So we got a 20 amp single receptacle protected by a 30 amp breaker on 30 amp wire and a tea Brewer pulling 18 amps MAX.

What is your worst case scenario of, if, or when something goes wrong?

Shouldn't the premises wiring be the last thing compromised?

Possibly the plug melting?

I think you are right. The worst case result would be a melted plug. But that might also include a bit of arcing and sparking. I don't know if they make duplex 30 amp receptacles. But if this is a single receptacle, then this "melting plug" could only result from a failure within whatever is plugged in. So even though this would be a code violation, the odds are that no bad thing would result. But then, "bad things" do sometimes beat the odds, and that is why we have codes.

where's the owners manual ...

where's the owners manual ...

I'd say the manufacturer knows what the machine needs ... a 20 amp cord cap means a 20 amp circuit ... has anybody looked at the "Cut Sheet" for the machine yet ... usually tells what is required ... I'd say whoever drew up the "Plans" made a wrong call ... M

Or the 18 amp machine has a history of tripping 20a breakers in other stores & they know exactly what it is they are trying to accomplish?

I've seen some clever Engineering done, one was in a tire center, the print

called for a 120vac 30a recpt. for the tire changer, why? Because all the 15-

20a 120vac recpts. had to be GFCI, and they didn't want any trouble with the

tire changer. The tire changer came in with a 20a cord and the amp draw was

12a.

I left it with a 30a recpt. I heard from the service dept. that they changed

it out to a 20a and a 20a GFCI breaker. I wonder what it looks like now.

I think you guys are way overanalyzing.

There is clearly a discrepancy between the equipment that showed up and what the plans call out.

My guess is the contract says just what to do in such a case.

There is no need to call UL or the manufacturer or anyone else.

The EC should write it up and give it to the GC who would pass it up the line for resolution.

The writeup could say something like "Plans for tea brewer show 30A CB and receptacle, equipment has 20A plug. Please advise."

Just posting about it has wasted more time than should have been spent just reporting the issue for resolution and letting the person responsible for resolving such things deal with it.

Are you sure? Maybe you should put more thought into it.

Ok, I've thought about it and I still think at times some topics get overanalyzed.

It's like I'm listening to Bill Clinton say it depends on what the meaning of is is.

Don't get me wrong; I enjoy a good discussion as much as anyone. I've been accused many times in my life of overanalyzing. I just admit that I am guilty of doing it. How well do you know yourself?

Bob , you should take a peek at the "a switch is an outlet thread"

Hey guys, I couldn't help but notice the word "anal" in the overanalyzing comment above ,... could we all be anal as well????? or perhaps that's why we analyze all this shi&

Thanks for the laugh!
