Temp service switchboard

Trying to determine what size temp switchboard I'll need to feed some loads and branch panelboard. How to I go about calculating the size I'll need? A brief overview of the info I'll need would be helpful. I know I need to calculate the connected load...I think. I thought in th past someone elsewhere mentioned total kva. Thanks

You are correct. You'll need to sum the connected loads (kva). Then you'll include 125% of the largest motor. For a temp service you won't be taking demand factors or much diversity. Determine amps from kva and round up to the next highest standard rating from NEC 240.

Depending on the scope of the project it can vary widely. You have to factor in temporary hoists as well as temp power for the permanent elevators. To that add all of your lighting and power needs for hand tools, masonry saws, welders, temporary shanty power, etc. On our last project we had 2-800 amp temp services at opposite ends of the building, on our current project we have 3-4000 amp temp services.
