Jim we often go overhead to job trailers, we first pull a nylon rope between the points then tie wrap the SE to that.Originally posted by jimwalker:
Just simply no way i would do this.
Dave and Pierre you are such hard liners.Originally posted by pierre:
527.2 or 590.2 requires that all other requirements for permanent wiring shall apply unless modified by this article.
As Dave has mentioned height requirements are to be followed. So are some of the requirements for NM, UF and SE.
UF cable is not permitted as an overhead cable, unless installed with a messenger - 340.12(11), that messenger is required to be a wire as per 396.2
The same requirement is for SE cable as per Table 396.10(A). Don't forget about 396.60 Grounding.
Here is the Handbook commentary (2002)527.4(J) Support. Cable assemblies and flexible cords and cables shall be supported in place at intervals that ensure that they will be protected from physical damage. Support shall be in the form of staples, cable ties, straps, or similar type fittings installed so as not to cause damage. Vegetation shall not be used for support of overhead spans of branch circuits or feeders.
I will stick with my nylon rope messenger supporting SER.Per 527.4(J), temporary wiring methods do not have to be supported in accordance with the permanent installation requirements (from Chapter 3) for the particular wiring method. It should be noted the temporary wiring must be removed upon completion of construction and adequate support is needed only to minimize the possibility of damage to the wiring method during its temporary period of use. It is not permitted to use vegetation as a support structure for overhead spans of branch-circuit and feeder conductors.

I agree Dave, I suggested UF or SE in place of NMOriginally posted by websparky:
However, I do not approve NM for overhead outside conductors!
