Need some guidance (among other things):

I have a temporary power skid being powered by a gas generator.

Is there a distance requirement between generator and skid per code?

Current installation, generator is approx. 1 foot away from skid, outdoor application.

Concern: gas fumes and electrical spark can cause explosion.

Do not know details (size of generator, panel, etc.). I am guessing it is less than 100KW.

The NEC says very little about location of generators. 445.10 simply says that they "will be of a type suitable for the locations in which they are installed".

The International Fire Code has more specifics on generator location. However, I don't believe it addresses your specific question. In fact, I know of a number of generator distribution boxes that take three phase 208/240 x amp and break it down to 240 50 amp for distribution through spider boxes that literally hang on the side of the generator. As there is a basic electrical distribution within the generator itself, I would be surprised to find any code speaking to a distance requirement.

Tim.

If you have enough gas fumes coming from that generator that the potential for spark ignition concerns you, have the generator fixed.
