Terminating Two conductors

Question: Does the NEC talk about being able to terminate 2 cables under one compression lug? Specific: the grounded conductor. Engineer thinks he can terminate to 500 mcm cables under a 1000 mcm rated compression lug.

Re: Terminating Two conductors

Who makes the lug?

The manufacturer will tell you in their literature or technical department whether their lug is rated for two conductors.

Check their web site for documentation to present the engineer.

This is not directly spelled out in the NEC. Look at 110.3.

Re: Terminating Two conductors

I don't know a lug manufacturer that has a UL listing that allows is. In the larger compression style lugs its only one cable per opening.
Now, if I were to take a guess that lug is attached to a device such as a breaker for example and breakers usually have other lugs with cable combinations as you may need. In other words consider changing the lugs.
If I remember correctly lugs fall under UL486 which require heat rise and pull tests when used with a given cable(s). To attempt to apply cables other than those listed would violate no only the UL listing but the NEC of stated in art 110.

Re: Terminating Two conductors

I am curious if common sense has left this engineer? Yes, adding the two cables together you get the same circular mil area. But now we are talking about trying to fit two cables into the compression terminal side-by-side. How would they even fit?

Re: Terminating Two conductors

I'd be curious to see what he had in mind.

And, if he could actually get two 500MCM into a single 1000MCM compression connector I would be darned impressed  .

Unless there's a product out there I don't know about -I run into 'em every day-. I don't see it physically happening.

Is this a new engineer? Not new to your company but fresh out of school?

Re: Terminating Two conductors

Not mention the fact that you dont run into 1000MCM crimp lugs everyday and your compnay might not even have that size dye for the high press tool. It would make better economic sense to just get 2 of the correct size instead of having to by and expensive dye.
