I have never seen thermoweld or a cad weld used for anything other than grounding or bonding. My question to anyone who has any expeirence using either one is it ever used as a butt splice connection for a power cable ? Thinking it might be a better connection for a problematic spot after being insulated of course. thanks.

I have used cad weld to join sections of busbar for high amperage DC power systems and routinely use it to butt splice 3/0 and 4/0 bare copper.

110.14(B) does not seem to limit the use of welds for splicing of ungrounded conductors other than the standard "shall be listed" language and to say that the insulation of the splice must be equivalent to that of the conductor.

I have seen 2 recordable lost time injuries related to cad welding in my career. I strongly encourage the use of a hot work program for even a single weld and even for the most experienced electrician.
