Just wondering.....

Just wondering.....

.....I have dealt with that old BX before. I was lucky on a few occasions as was able to pull it out with new romex tied to the other end. Kinda like using it as the fish tape. And I think I was only lucky a few times, maybe twice, but was able to actually pull the individual conductors out. If that were to happen it would be pure luck since that old wire tends to stick to the BX.

You didn't really pull romex into old Bx, did you?

When my friends ask me to help them with there "Home Projects".
They first offerr me beer then I see the "Work" they've already done
and have to decline and say,"I have to be sober to fix this!"

I looked in a few other boxes inn the house and true to tradition of that time period, there's no more than 3" of free conductor available in every box.

you know, i've never gotten an explanation for that either.

i've had to replace receptacles that didn't even have enough slack to pull it out of the box far enough to unscrew the terminal.

I swear it was almost like they installed the receps at the rough, and then pulled the wire back as tight as possible, then on to the next box.

It seems like those guys coming out of the depression area were really set on not wasting an inch.

Tony gave the best serious answer: slip some stripped insulation from NM or THxx. If the same size won't slide on with a bit of twisting, use a size up.

I intentionally remove as much crumbling insulation as I can, right into the sheath. The wirenut or Wago will keep the sleeve in place if you size it right.

Oh, yeah: be sure to use the right color insulation.

Ditto.... But will say this - Stranded insulation is slightly wider than solid insulation and easier to manage getting it off the stranded wire and sliding it onto solid conductors of BX or say K&T - IMO. ;)
