What is the general consensus on training DVD's and online courses for NFPA 70E and Osha 10/30/40Hr. courses?

NFPA.org has a few DVD's for NFPA 70E that look appealing. The reason being is that we get new foreman (who we want to be "qualified") from time to time (union, commercial/Industrial contractor) and a DVD would be a lot easier than setting up a training course for every time we get a new guy one at a time. Seems like it would be good for a refresher re-training every three years as well.

Also looking at some online Osha 10/30/40hr. courses. Benefit is that they can be completed at your own pace and include certificate and card. Cons?

I would stay away from any CBT longer then 1 hour. I've had the privelage of taking TWO 26 hr long classes (that I had already taken in classroom) via computer and wanted to kill someone after the first one.

I think the CONS far outway the PROS in CBT.

1. No interaction with a subject matter expert if you were to have a question.

2. CBT's do not ellaborate

3. CBT's are sometimes not written by SME's and contain errors. This is the worst type, since it could take years to debunk the crap they "taught" your new folks.

Many companies are leaning towards CBT's as a way to save money, but that old saying still holds true, "you get what you pay for."

Did I mention I hate CBT's?

Ditto, ditto, ditto, and ditto.

I had to retrain employees and each location for a large automotove company that tried using a DVD based program to train all of thier electrical workers and operators, did more damage than good, retraining was harder than training them right the first time. I don't believe something as complex as 70E which should have a different approach for different situations (Type of company, work, equipment, policies) can be effectivly taught froma canned presentation.

Thanks guys. Seems like a live course is the way to go. As for refresher courses though, I can't imagine the training DVD's directly from NFPA being harmful.
