I'll like to add to my profile with additional information to be displayed to state which NFPA-70 One work's under, frankly I think it'd be a smart addition.

Code Yr.; Cycle Year; Working From; Write in ________

I thought of this after reading this OP's thread! Here, today!

This idea would be great for electricians and contractors. It would be nice to read a post and know right off the bat what code the poster is referring to.

What about the EE's, designers, and retired people here? They may operate under multiple NEC's or none.

I got the idea from George for the red part of my signature line, does this fill the bill (the bad part is when the 2011 Edition comes out, the signature line will change for past answers)? :)

Right here.
Maybe download a utility, like autohotkey.exe, that will manually put in a signature that is permanently stuck to your post? You could type something like "signoff" and it would substitute maybe your name, jurisdiction, NEC code you're under, etc. Just an idea. I'm toying with that utility right now, so that it will write out stuff like "multiwire branch circuit" every time I type MWBC. It's called an autoreplace hotstring.

You clearly have too much time on your hands. :)
No, it may well save me tons of time in emails, etc. I suspect very much that user (gar?) uses a utility like that to auto input the current date and time in the header of each of his posts. I just made a keyboard hotkey that will make my mouse wheel scroll left and right (instead of up and down) to look at big pictures quicker.

Oh right...I suppose those would actually come in handy, especially for professional forum posters like some people here who will go unnamed, myself included of course. ;)

But the fact that you talk about MWBC's in emails is worrisome. :D

Dude, I may have more posts here, but I would not be surprised if Marc does not have more posts in total spread out through a number of different forums.

I think he mentioned he has a software app that watches the forums for activity.

Good idea. Add it to your signature like I just did:

This wouldn't work for anyone in Texas.
State goes to 2008 Monday but this only applies outside of municipalities and there are no inspections.

Every municipality is free to use whatever NEC cycle they wish.

None I have worked in recently are on 2008 and most are pre-2005.

One is still under 1993 with amendments. One amendment is no wire under #12 except for switch legs.

Several have the no wire under 12 rule but this is the only one I know of that goes against 240.4(D).

Well, the same thought goes for placing you location in your profile, some make fun of it, some don't use it at all, but again if it is there one would get a better over-all answer to their individual questions. The same thought is why I posted the statement. Code year and location, seems pretty clear to me. Others will never need to apply their location cause there State doesn't have a license requirement, thats all good as well, We know who you are ! :)

Theres a very mixed bag of requirements that people have to have, or not have and use daily per their region, I totally understand all this.

I know that the forum is slow to a formal change.

Frankly I don't expect anything and will continue to go through a post, "oh I'm code year 2005' with additional codes, Etc., and thats usually in the first or second reponse to the "What Code cycle are you in", response!

Chris K: Engineers and designers are subject to the state laws to which they reside in, they may well have multi licenses in different states and then they are subject to the active state laws in respect to that states Code cycle-laws to which they are appling their design.

wirebender: I'm glad you know all your required rules for your region, its frankly stunding to read others that are also licensed and fall short of having a total grasp of their own state/regional rules. JMO... ;)

It's not easy. Every time we work in a new municipality we ask what code cycle and any local amendments they use when we register our license.

This is not foolproof. Couple months ago did a residence in a city that said 2005, no amendments. Wired the house as normal and called for inspection. Chief inspector said he had already seen it while doing the mechanical insp. and it was one of the best looking jobs he had seen in a while, but they didn't allow any wire smaller than #12.

Had to replace all the #14, took a day and a half.

Anybody looking for a lot of random length #14 NM?

Suggest you request the response to be officially documented for your records. Verbal responses are seldom binding.

My middle name is Douglas, in case you care. (My grandpa gave me this cool portfolio carrier thing for remembering how to spell my middle name when I was little. Funny, the stuff you remember when you're looking back).
