Re: Three foot rule

no, section 358.30(A) lists all the locations in which EMT needs to be securely fastened within 3 feet. Couplings are not included in that list. After that, its every ten feet. Nothing in this section indicates that support needs to be near or at couplings or other fittings.

Re: Three foot rule

There is no requirement for strapping EMT within 3' of a coupling. 358.30(A) states that EMT shall be securely fastened within 3' of termination. For example an outlet box, junction box, cabinet etc. A coupling is clearly not a termination.

Here is a 99 NEC (there was a article number change) graphic to go with Bryan's and Infinity's replies.

Re: Three foot rule

The requirement for a support within 3' of a coupling was a rule that was droped a few code cycles ago. I don't remember when.
Sounds like an old timer (like me) that still likes the rule and still tries to put a support within 3' of a coupling.
I think that is why Mike Holt's graphic above is specific to state that a support is not required within 3' of a coupling.

Re: Three foot rule

hmmm... my first thought was that EMT was never required to be fastened within 3 feet of couplings. I grabbed my 1981 code book and sure enough like the post above states, EMT was required to be strapped "within 3 feet of each outlet box, junction box, cabinet, or fitting ."

Re: Three foot rule

Yes, it did use the word fitting at one time. CMP 8 had a problem with the use of that word in the raceway articles. They were often using the word fitting when they wanted to say conduit body. I think that you will find that the raceway articles permitted 360? of bend between "fittings" back then. If you applied the code rules you could have 360? of bend between each coupling without a pull point. In both cases the word fitting has been removed from the code sections.

Re: Three foot rule

This brings back memories, I always thought you had to support within 3 ft of a coupling until a few years ago, A friend of mine I used to work with, we were always arguing code in a friendly way. He said there isn't a requirement to support within 3' so we had a small wager. after looking back to the 99 code I conceded and bought him a coffee at break. I thought my mind was starting to go but now I know. :)

Re: Three foot rule

Thanks so much! This will make it so easy to present to the inspector and you all helped me earn a few brownie points with the boss. Thanks again.

Re: Three foot rule

When in doubt use another strap, more is better, I know every 10 feet is plenty as per code but I suppot the crap out of everything, I sleep better.
