It sounds like a small mill that has no thoughts of automating in the near future. If they had any thoughts of automating to improve throughput, efficiency, or cutting more board feet per board, they would be wise to spend the slightly more money today on a vfd so they can get to the next automation step without having to change out the softstart. But from your descriptions in this thread it appears used stuff and minimum everything is what they want.

He would love to have full automation of course if anyone wants to invest into the Mill, but for now he is making ends meet and steadily advancing and expanding, addressing issues as they come up. His brother in law sets up Automation around the world, and at this time and budget to make more money to afford the changes has said it is unnecessary at this time. it is more schedules downtime while things are slower. It is more of an Custom Woodworking niche than board feet volume sawmill at tis time... he isn't interested in competing with large mills already set up.

without pricing further, it is a choice between spending $3700 on new VFD, or with available parts he already has spend $100 on overloads and feed his family at Christmas... he built the Sawmill, and can adapt to change when the time for automation comes...
