It may be a lot cheaper to purchase a variable speed drive. It can produce 3 phase voltage from a single phase input.

Never heard of a varible speed drive where can I find one and how do they work?

A variable speed drive is used to control the speed of motors. There are many applications.
You probably won't need this application. Check with you distributer.

There are a number of sites on line that offer phase converters. Both static/electronic and motor driven. Then there are other sites that can tell how you can make one.
