three way

so i was reading another thread about a d'washer and a disposal on the same circut -

a remedy that was suggested was to use a three way to power one but not the other device -

im drawing a blank on how to do this - could someone explain this to me

Take the hot to the common.

One traveller feeds power to the DW. The other traveller powers the disposal.

Both are on the same circuit, and that one circuit isn't big enough to power both at the same time.

I dont know if a lot of people would really like that kind of set up though. That would be kind of like a plumber telling you sure you can use your dishwasher but you cant take a pee a the same time

Then they should have put the item on the plans. Tough noogies.
I'm sure the Op would be happy to run another circuit through that finished space for what.. $1000? 3-way here we come. LOL

Yes and my dishwasher needs to be reset after every power failure this would be mad annoying. This is a common problem because nobody wants to pay to wire the disposal. The homeowner that this similar complaint was bad mouthing me all over town. I was following direction of the nitwit gc that she hired . I dont want to work for her or any of her friends so it is ok they are probably just as big a pita as her.

I dont think a standard 3 way switch is listed to be used in this setup. I vaguely remember someone coming up with this idea tha had to do with a bath fan and a light or something of the like.

Why not? Aside from (perhaps not) being UL tested for the specific purpose... it is a UR device, the voltage is within limits, it isn't carrying any more load than the listing. Contacts are contacts.

You said it right there. It isnt listed for that intended purpose, that in itself is a NEC violation.

I disagree. A 3-way isn't marked for lighting-use only any more than a single-pole is.

It's function is to connect one terminal to either of the other two. A SPDT switch.
