To teach or not

I did sit in on a 3rd year class my boss was teaching. I saw students that were involved and others that looked to be sleeping that have me an attitude. This is current career choice and you won't invest yourself to be better?

It has been a couple of days since I started this thread but I appreciate all the comments. It has definitely given me more the think about.

This is the reason I declined to teach at the apprentice school. In my estimation more of the students I would have been teaching would fit into the latter category and lack the passion for learning that IMO they should have. It might be different in other areas but for me it just wasn't a good fit.

I started apprenticeship school at 46 years. I was very motivated and focused as I had a family to feed and needed to succeed in this new career choice. In contrast, I can attest that very few of the other students cared about the classroom work and just wanted to be doing "pipe and wire" on the jobsite. Most scored poorly on the tests and could not answer questions posed to them by the instructor. I suspect most of them were in the apprenticeship program not because being an electrician interested intellectually, but because they were not "college material" meaning they didn't have the skills or motivation to do book work.

I was approved to train apprentices while I was still a last year apprentice.

Later I took on training to train people to instruct apprentices. That involved university.

It’s a long and bumpy road but well worth the effort. The world needs skilled tradespersons and they don’t grow on trees.
