Hello. I have a Oster toaster oven.
I’ve unplugged it when not in use for years.
Lately I’ve been leaving it plugged in.

About 4 times now in the past couple months it turns on when the chassis is touch.
Once was with a dinner plate. One with a plastic utensil dw basket. Twice with a touch of a hand ( no static electricity)

I unplugged it. And now when I plug it in the lights come on and it beeps then turns off in a few seconds ( which it Use to just stay off when I plugged in )

Is this something that can be explained, especially the lights coming on when touched with non conductive inanimate objects? Or just drop it into the garbage and don’t give it a second thought. Just curious. Thanks.

What is supposed to normally control it? Sounds more possible for what you described with say a touch screen controller than for something with actual contacts for control switches.

What is an Oster toaster?
Just out of interest to you mean Jersey in the Channel Islands?

Just to mention.
Two wire non grounded plug plugged into a Gfci recept.
Point of touching was lower front edge corner by lower knob.

That’s it. Thx again.

Throw it out and get a new one. They are cheap enough.

Your story reminds me of my mother's smooth-top Kenmore range -- it's a Frigidaire/Electrolux under the covers. One of the stovetop burners started randomly turning on high without warning. They went to turning off the breaker and turning it on when using it (sigh). I replaced the cooktop relay board and that fixed it. I went though all the relays and one was broken inside. Not sure how a design could allow this to fail on -- the same goes for your toaster over. Btw, the oven stopped working on this one also and I replaced another relay board to fix that.

Sounds like a loose connection that is by passing the switch somehow. Open it up and look or throw it out

Oster is a small appliance brand, mostly known for blenders "Osterizer" was name they were known for in the past.

Power surge (dip, spike, ring wave) damaged the electronics, or, electronics went south for some reason, maybe some harmonics on that ckt?

I would think low probability of an internal loose wire.

Harmonics come from many household items. Printers, LED bulbs, fan control units, VFD's (pool pumps, some laundry equipment), on and on that list goes.

Go put the portable scope on FFT mode and see what's there.

I remember my Dad had a microwave that would turn all by itself with the door open. Freaked the heck out of me, but apparently it was a common problem with one specific model.

Apparently, the fan and turntable would turn on, but there was still a safety circuit that kept the microwaves off when the door was open.
