Re: torque limiting screw drivers ?

About 4 years after my parents moved into a townhouse in Bradfordwoods, PA we started having problems with the aluminum branch circuits because the original electrician never used any joint compound.

In the case of the central air, stove, and clothes dryer circuits cleaning the wire strands with silicon carbide paper and gooping with joint compound was pretty straightforward.

Next came the service circuit breaker and meter socket. I had somebody from Penn Power come out and breake the seal for me. (They have different procedures than their parent company which is Ohio Edison.) Pretty soon I had to call them back and have somebody bring me some spare terminal parts. The original electrician had overtorqued the cheap steel terminals causing metal fatigue and the terminals broke.

About 6 or 8 months ago somebody who worked for my boss wrecked a terminal in a 20 HP 240 volts 3-phase soft start. Had to buy a new one. Ilsco refused to sell us a new lug even though one other person there said that they make them for Siemens. To make things worse, Siemens brand name labeled this soft start for Dover Elevator which is now Thyssen-Krupp. The terminal does have a medium sized auxiliary terminal that will take #2 wire but we would then be stuck with having to use a bypass contactor. In a few months I might try round 2 on procuring a new terminal from Siemens rather than Ilsco. Wish me luck.
