train site lighting

I am installing pole lights along train tracks. Does anyone know of or where i could look for any requirements on distance the lighting show be away from the train tracks to ensure no hands or feet will be injured from the ride.

I would recommend at least 7 feet from the field side of the rail.

What does the railroad say? If you're on their right-of-way, they'll have specs for this (based on the traffic and cars used on that line). Take a look at the Physical Dimensions section of http://www.trains.com/trn/default.aspx?c=a&id=209.

Is it an electric train track?

There are some gotchas installing electrical stuff parallel to electrified train tracks, as if the traction return current if not sufficiently controlled can make its way into your ground wiring with unpleasent consequences.

I've never worked directly on this stuff, but when they put a tramway in somewhere I used to live there were all sorts of electrical problems because of traction current getting into the power reticulation,l and the cable TV, and a load of other things...
