Installing a new 200 amp service in a residence. Home owner wants to install a transfer switch for a future generator. Transfer switch will be installed between the main disconnect & main panel. Should I use a 2-pole or a 3-pole transfer switch? Still confused on when to disconnect neutral & when not to. Thanks for any help.

Re: Transfer Switch

George, the transfer switch used depends on whether the generator neutral is bonded to it's frame, or not.

If it is not, Diagram 1 is recommended.

If the generator neutral-to-frame bond exists, it will need to be configured as an SDS, Diagram 2.

If this is for a future generator, I would go with the SDS configuration.

Re: Transfer Switch

95% of transfer switches do not transfer the neutral. Use a 2 pole switch. Make sure there is no neutral to frame bond in the generator, so its like diagram 1. You have to open up the generator. if using a portable cord, it will have to be a 4 wire cord.
ED, super job on the drawings!
